THE FUTURE OF PROCESSING THAT WE WILL NEVER GET TO SEE!

Last night I was doing some of my standard research on processors and their incredibly increasing power on smart phones and then a question popped into my mind.

We have seen 32-bit processors get a bit old fashioned as the new 64-bit ones came.
So will the same happen when the 128-bit ones come?

If yes, then where are they?

And as usual, it sparked a big fire of doubts in my mind to be only put of by the water of answers.


What exactly are these 32 & 64 bit processors?

Simply speaking these are these are the 2 different types of processors having different powers when processing data in a device.

The 32-bit processors process only upto 32-bit integer limit while the 64-bit ones only upto the 64-bit integer limit.

As you can probably tell, the 64-bit processor is much faster than it's 32-bit counterpart.


But what effect do they have on the RAM?

Thought the processor might not have any 'hardware' effects on RAM but it does have software effects on it (kind of).

The 32-bit processor can only address RAM memory up to 4 GB meaning that even if you have 16 GB of Available RAM memory in your computer, due to the 32-bit processor, it will only use 4 GB from it.

The remaining memory will not be of any use.

However, the 64-bit processor can address up to 16 Billion GB (or 16 exabytes of memory) which is something, we will not be caring about anytime soon.

And this brings us to our main question, what about 128-bit Processors?

(This is not a 128-bit processor)!

Though it might seem fairly intresting for some of you to know about a 128 bit Processor, the truth is that we will not be needing it anytime soon.

Since 64-bit Processors were only here to use when the 32-bit processors seemed limited (beacuse of only 4 GB of ram), the 64-bit processors will not be easily limited as we might not quite reach the 64-bit limit (at least not in the lifetime of the reader!)

Plus even if we reach this limit and need 128-bit processors, they would be quite slow due to other reasons and hence destroy the sole purpose of using them (which is speed).


So at this point the question is not How we need them, but is Do we need them?

Although we might need 128-bit processors in future when doing really high level Encryption or in Machine Learning (which by the way, I have great posts on, so go check em' out!).

The 128-bit processors are surely the future of processing (which proves that the title is not a click-bait) but a very far future.

From home to NASA level stuff, 64-bit processors are more than enough.

But if are motivated by reading this blog then go ahead and start researching on yourself.

But be-aware as you may find intense technical terms out there.
